New Tax Law Jeopardizes Your Affiliate Relationships

My good friend and SEO Guru and Super Affiliate Jerry West over at http://www.WebMarketingNow.com posted an excellent article on his blog today about how Uncle Sam is not only making his way into your pocket, but how the “Amazon Tax” is causing many affiliates to LOSE their affiliate accounts.

But lot’s of people still don’t know what the “Amazon Tax” is. In short, if you are an affiliate, the merchant hosting the affiliate program now has to collect sales tax on the sale that your lead generated and submit it to the state where you are a resident.

What’s crazy about this is the tax is not where the purchaser of the product lives, but YOU, as the affiliate live.

It’s not fair in anyway whatsoever, but it’s the law in places like North Carolina, New York and Rhode Island.

Now if you don’t live in those states you may think you have nothing to worry about. Don’t be so quick to think you’re safe because every state is scrambling to look for ways to increase revenues into the state Treasury. And as far as State government goes when it comes to tax collection, it’s often “monkey see, monkey do.”

In other words, states often look to see what other states are doing. If those states are bringing in more revenue, you can bet it’s only a matter of time before your state jumps on the bandwagon. North Carolina is the perfect example. They are following the lead of those in New York and Rhode Island.

The bottom line is that is this will have major implications for affiliates all over the country. It’s an unfair practice that can’t be allowed to stand as law. It’s nothing more then a cash grab by the state and yours could be next.

So what can you do about it? How do you let the state governments that this new tax collection method oversteps the law?

Well the NC bill goes before the governor on July 15th. The best way to stop this spread of “cash grab politics” is to stop it from being passed in North Carolina.

Why? Because if it fails there, other (yours) states may drop interest in the tax as well.
