Do Directory Submissions Still Work?
SEO 101:
The answer is yes – IF you do it right and submit to the right directories (only 5-6) . Do it wrong and not only are you wasting your time, you could even hurt yourself.
So here’s a quick tip: When submitting your web site or blog to directories it’s very important that use your company name or site name (domain name) in anchor text when asked for the title.
Now some people are still doing it “old school” and using one of their keywords in anchor text when doing their submissions.
But these days, that pretty much considered “black hat seo” and directories that do accept keywords in anchor text of a link are getting penalized by search engines like Google.
You can check all top internet directories like business.com, dmoz.org, Google directory, Yahoo directory and my favorite botw.org, and you’ll see that they all use web site company name in anchor text of the link.
There’s a reason for that. Pay attention and don’t try to rock the boat. They don’t want a penalty from google so they are playing by google’s rules.
Link Quality Counts:
Lastly, it’s really not worth your time submitting a site to hundreds of different free directories, even it is automated via some software.
Instead just getting a link from one or two quality directories like botw.org and the Yahoo directory is enough to get your site indexed and perhaps even higher.
