This week my friend (often mentor) SEO / Affiliate Marketing Expert Jerry West was invited to speak at PubCon this year in Las Vagas.

I’m sure it was an interesting delemia for Jerry because you don’t want to give away all your tricks, right? In fact, Jerry talks about this internal struggle on his blog – but finally decided to reveal what he did four years ago that put him on the path today as one of the best “below the radar” super affiliates working today.

Lisa Barone over at OutSpoken Media, did an awesome post on her blog that summarizes Jerry’s presentation. It’s a great read.

During his presentation, Jerry covered 3 of the most important strategies that affiliates need to follow if they really want to get  serious about making a living as a full time affiliate. I’ll touch on them here for you.

  1. Improve your relationship with affiliate manager of the programs you want to / are promoting. They are more picky than ever. Pick up the phone and simply ask how you can make their job easier. Be completely transparent. Never lie. Never bluff.
  2. Always, always, always cloak your links. Never post links that you haven’t cloaked. Realize that the merchant you are promoting for can see at least two clicks back so they can see where you’re getting your traffic. Don’t tell them the source of your traffic because they will steal it by going directly to that traffic source and cutting a deal directly.  They will have no problem cutting out the middleman ( THAT’S YOU).
  3. Know your competition. Know their products, merchant and affiliates.  Know the “points of difference” between you and your competition.  Study and lean landing page design.  Once you find a successful model: lather, rinse, repeat. Don’t complicate it. Just do what’s working.
